The standard
How eligibility is tested, what is assessed, what is excluded, and what money cannot buy.
To be eligible in any category a practitioner must hold a current practising certificate in the state or territory of the award, or, for a firm, be a currently registered legal practice. We check the relevant regulator’s public register at the close of the window and again before publication.
Recognition is awarded within one practice area and one state or territory. A practitioner may qualify in more than one area, and each is assessed separately on its own reviews.
The 2027 edition counts verified client reviews published between 15 September 2026 and 31 May 2027. Nominations close 30 April 2027. Results publish 1 July 2027. Each subsequent edition runs on the same cycle, and a review counts toward one edition only.

The two categories open in the inaugural year are built entirely on verified client reviews. Client reviews are excellent evidence of client experience: responsiveness, clarity about costs, whether someone was kept informed, whether they felt heard. They are poor evidence of technical excellence, because most clients have one matter and no comparison, and because the client who loses a well-run case and the client who wins a badly-run one both review the outcome.
That is why Leading Lawyer, Leading Law Firm, Rising Star and Access to Justice do not open until independent professional assessment is in place: references from practitioners and instructing solicitors, evidence of matter complexity, and documented work in the case of Access to Justice. Client feedback alone will never produce a professional ranking on this site.
Every qualifying file is checked before it can produce a recipient:
Lawyer Reviews Australia publishes a disclosure of the founder’s interests, including family connections within the profession. Any practitioner or firm connected to the publisher is identified on their profile, and is excluded from every award category while that connection exists. Where a connection emerges after publication, the recognition is withdrawn and the withdrawal is published.
Selection is independent of advertising, sponsorship, profile products and any other commercial relationship. Sponsorship may fund production of the annual report and is named on it. Trophies, framed certificates and printed material are optional purchases available only after recognition is decided; buying one cannot produce, extend or upgrade recognition, and declining one changes nothing. Sponsored placements elsewhere on this site carry a Sponsored label and never appear in an award list.
If a published figure is wrong, write to hello@lawyerreviews.com.au. We check it against the dataset and, if it is wrong, correct it publicly under our corrections policy, noting what changed and when. A recipient may decline or withdraw at any time, and we remove the listing without asking why.
